Grid Modernization


Mr. Stephen Allen is an Electrical Engineering Technologist with Powertech’s Grid Modernization team. He performs complex testing and applied research of advanced telecommunications networks through detailed analysis, implementation and installation, integration, management and maintenance. His responsibilities also include performing data analysis of results and writing detailed test reports explaining test findings and providing recommendations as needed.

Dr. Eric (Qian) Li has more than 18 years professional experience with high-power, high-voltage and high-current testing, as well as electric power testing equipment and system development. With 15 years working in world-class electric power testing organizations, Dr. Li is experienced in a wide variety of electric power equipment testing procedures and techniques. As a specialist engineer and project leader in Powertech’s High Power Lab, Dr. Li is responsible for planning, preparing and executing a broad spectrum of electric power tests in accordance with IEEE, IEC, ANSI, UL and CSA standards to properly address the needs of electric utilities and manufacturers worldwide.

Mr. Jack Geng is an Electrical Test Engineer for the High Power Lab at Powertech Labs. In this role he is responsible for conducting high power testing, high voltage testing, performing transformer condition assessments, conducting research projects and performing major test equipment troubleshooting and failure analysis.

Mr. Geng is a Professional Engineer registered with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta.

Mr. Mark Crapper is a Senior Technician for the High Power Lab within the Substations sector. He is responsible for short circuit testing on a variety of substation and distribution equipment. In this role, Mark programs custom data acquisition systems that include a real time view. He works with the software team to develop post analysis software that has many built in functions for fault analysis, and programs timer control systems that are used to control various I/Os for different fault tests. Additionally, Mark maintains 230kV circuit breakers, transformers and specialized point on wave control switches.
