Dr. Vidya Vankayala is the Director of Grid Modernization at Powertech. With more than 25 years of experience in the utility and hi-tech sectors, Dr. Vankayala has helped several utilities in grid modernization, distribution automation, smart energy program management and system integration. He has extensive experience in management consulting for electric utility transmission and distribution and also worked for two large technology vendors that provide grid modernization technologies to the global utility sector.
Mr. Roham Bazarjani is the Engineering Team Lead in the Distribution Grid Management and EV Infrastructure section of the Grid Modernization sector at Powertech Labs. He has more than eleven years’ experience leading teams and successfully executing projects safely for clients in several industries, including electrical utilities, pulp and paper, oil and gas, chemical and mining.
With expertise in electrical and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems engineering, as well as strong knowledge in communications, Roham is a valuable asset to the Grid Modernization sector at Powertech Labs.
Mr. Stephen Allen is an Electrical Engineering Technologist with Powertech’s Grid Modernization team. He performs complex testing and applied research of advanced telecommunications networks through detailed analysis, implementation and installation, integration, management and maintenance. His responsibilities also include performing data analysis of results and writing detailed test reports explaining test findings and providing recommendations as needed.
Mr. Eugene Crozier is a Wireless Specialist for the Grid Modernization sector at Powertech Labs. His work is focused on use of wireless systems such as WiMAX and LTE for critical infrastructure industries, and 4G based wireless and wireline solutions for backhaul and relay systems.
Dr. Mažana Armstrong is the Senior Manager of the High Power Lab at Powertech Labs, a subsidiary of BC Hydro. She has 25 years of professional experience in operations, maintenance, design and testing of high voltage electric power systems, specifically electrical aspects of 69 kV to 500 kV transmission systems. At Powertech, Mazana leads the High Power Lab specialized in evaluation, verification and certification testing of medium and high voltage equipment to support manufacturers, power utilities and other industrial users of electrical equipment, as well as providing R&D and consulting services to the utility industry.
Prior to coming to Powertech, Mažana was a Specialist Engineer for Overhead Transmission Lines at BC Hydro, specializing in electrical aspects of transmission line design, operation and maintenance including electrical coordination and joint use of transmission right of ways. Mažana holds an M.Sc., and a Ph.D., in Electrical Engineering from the University of British Columbia, and is a registered Professional Engineer with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia. Mazana is actively involved in leadership roles with IEEE Power and Energy Society and she is an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer.
Mr. Morton is a Principal Engineer with Powertech’s High Power Lab under the Grid Modernization group, where he currently performs high power electrical testing. Types of tests include short-circuit, arcing fault, switching, interruption and fault-making testing. He has 30 years of experience in laboratory testing and evaluation of electrical utility and industrial equipment, including high and medium voltage switchgear, fuses, power and grounding connectors, power and instrument transformers, reactors, traction power supplies, high voltage cables and cable accessories, terminations, large machine stator coils, revenue meters, electric motors and motor drive systems.
Development projects that Mr. Morton has been involved in include the design and testing of an isolated safety grounding device for BC Hydro, and improvement to an existing automatic splice design. Mr. Morton has also participated in work involving technology transfer and education, including preparation of an adjustable speed drive user’s guide for BC Hydro, preparation of a variety of informational documents related to adjustable speed drives and electric motors, and development of software to demonstrate power quality and grounding problems that may occur on the power distribution system.
Dr. Eric (Qian) Li has more than 18 years professional experience with high-power, high-voltage and high-current testing, as well as electric power testing equipment and system development. With 15 years working in world-class electric power testing organizations, Dr. Li is experienced in a wide variety of electric power equipment testing procedures and techniques. As a specialist engineer and project leader in Powertech’s High Power Lab, Dr. Li is responsible for planning, preparing and executing a broad spectrum of electric power tests in accordance with IEEE, IEC, ANSI, UL and CSA standards to properly address the needs of electric utilities and manufacturers worldwide.
