Dr. Xi Lin is the Director of the Power Systems sector. His main responsibility is to develop and maintain the DSATools software package. DSATools provides a complete toolset for power system planning and operational studies. The key components in the suite, VSAT, TSAT, and SSAT, have also been designed to be used for on-line dynamic security assessment (DSA). In this mode, the software is connected directly to a power system’s energy management system (EMS) and assesses the system security in continuous cycles.
Dr. Saeed Arabi brings more than 40 years of electrical engineering experience to the Power Systems team. Dr. Arabi was born in Tehran, Iran, where he received his B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology in 1974, and worked for both government and private companies before coming to Canada in 1979. He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Manitoba in 1981 and 1985, respectively. He has been with Powertech Labs since 1993.
Dr. Arabi’s interests include power system stability and control, Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission. He has authored numerous publications on these and other subjects.
Dr. Xianrong Wang is a Specialist Expert at Powertech and provides a broad spectrum of power system study and software development services to our electric utilities clients. His main interests include power system optimization, stability and control, modeling, and application of advanced database technologies. He has extensive experience in building power flow and dynamic simulation cases for the entire NERC Eastern-Interconnection (EI) system and many regional systems, as well as performing power system static and dynamic reductions to suit a variety of power system planning and operational study needs. Dr. Wang has expert knowledge of equipment models, simulation techniques, algorithms, and databases.
Dr. Zhihong Feng leads Powertech’s technical team across a broad spectrum of power system studies—from generation and load interconnection studies, model development or validation for conventional generators and renewable resources, electromagnetic transient analysis to power system planning and operation studies. He is also responsible for business planning and development, technical training, contract negotiation, execution and delivery of projects.
As Powertech’s Chief Application Architect, Mr. Frederic Howell is responsible for the maintenance and enhancements to DSAToolsTM software for bulk power system security assessment. This includes software applications for voltage stability, transient stability, and small-signal stability assessment. Mr. Howell performs a key role in providing support and development for DSA Manager, Powertech’s online integration package, which is used by a number of major ISOs and utilities worldwide for assessing the security of their power systems in control room applications.
Mr. Howell has 18 years of experience at Powertech Labs as an engineer, software developer, and project manager.
Mr. Ryon Howell is the manager for Network Applications in the Power System Studies sector at Powertech Labs. His expertise lies in software design and architecture, computer networking, distributed computing, Microsoft windows programming, multi-threaded implementations, and real-time system development.
Dr. Alireza Kahrobaeian is a specialist engineer in Powertech’s Power Systems department. Since joining Powertech in 2014, Dr. Kahrobaeian has participated in major power system studies and model validations in North America using the DSATools™ suite of next-generation power system analysis tools for planning and operational studies.
Dr. Akshaya Kumar Moharana is a specialist engineer and business development specialist at Powertech and performs a wide range of power system studies. His consulting activities focus on composite load modeling, small-signal stability analysis, transient stability studies, transfer analysis and evaluation of security limits, Total Transfer Capability (TTC) and System Operating Limit (SOL) calculation, renewable energy integration studies, electromagnetic transient studies, and various NERC/WECC compliance studies.
