Powertech Participates in the IPCC Special Report on Renewable Energy and Climate Change Mitigation
January 14, 2009
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a scientific intergovernmental body established in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), provides decision-makers and others with an objective source of information about climate change. The IPCC shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former Vice-President of the United States Al Gore. Since the publication of the Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) by the IPCC in 2007, significant new information has been reported in the literature on technological development and deployment, environmental and socio-economic impacts, and cost reduction. Due to the dynamic development of markets and investments and the experience gained from enabling policy framework, additional evidence has emerged since the publication of the AR4 report. The IPCC has made a decision to develop a Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources and Climate Change Mitigation (SRREN). Gouri Bhuyan of Powertech has accepted an invitation from the IPCC Working Group III on Mitigation to be a Lead Author for the SRREN Report. The report would provide a better understanding of: - Various renewable energy sources (such as, hydropower, bioenergy, wind energy, solar energy, geothermal energy, and ocean energy & impacts of climate change on these resources
- Mitigation potential of these renewable energy resources
- Economic & environmental costs, benefits, risks and impacts of deployments
- Capacity building, technology transfer and financing for different regions, and
- Policy options, outcomes and conditions for effectiveness.
Powertech will be contributing to the section of the report dealing with Integration of Renewable Energy into Present and Future Energy Supply Systems. The IPCC report is expected to be finalized by end of 2010 through an extensive review process involving various governments and international experts.
