Initiation of the Hydrogen Assisted Renewable Power (HARP) Project

August 14, 2007

BC Hydro has approved a project that would use hydrogen to supplement renewably generated power in a non-integrated community, Bella Coola. The project will explore the technical and commercial feasibility of using a hydrogen energy system to help serve remote communities in BC. The project would generate hydrogen using an electrolyser at times when there is a surplus of renewably generated electricity at BC Hydro’s Clayton Falls generating station. The hydrogen fuel will be stored to generate electricity using a fuel cell during times of peak demand. General Electric has agreed to partner with BC Hydro on this project to develop an energy management system to control and optimize the hardware. The Federal Government, through its agency Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) has agreed to provide 30% co-funding for this project.

If this project is successful, HARP technologies can then be considered for deployment in other remote communities in BC to assit BC Hydro's Remote Communities Electrification Initiative.
